11 Kid-Friendly Things to do in Nashville, TN

Nashville isn’t just known as Music City. It’s also a playground full of exciting, educational, and free (or affordable!) options for families with little ones. From splash pads to museums, parks and zoos, here are our top kid-approved activities that will make your next family adventure unforgettable.  

  1. Centennial Park: Nestled close to downtown (diagonal from Vanderbilt University), Centennial Park is a perfect spot for families. You can spread out a picnic blanket, toss a frisbee, enjoy the walking paths and spot the ducks, or let the kids run around on the open lawns. The park’s centerpiece is the iconic full scale replica of the ancient Greek Parthenon. It’s size is impressive, and it’s a It’s a great way to share the history. You’ll definitely want to pay to see the giant, golden Athena inside.  

2. Adventure Science Center: For 80 years, this has been one of Nashville’s go to spots for families. With over 175 interactive exhibits, the hands-on museum makes learning feel like playtime.  Even the adults love the physics experiments, Discovery Tower playground, and planetarium. Also, your kids may spot the large geometric dome as you drive through the city.

3. Tennessee State Museum (Children’s Area) – The museum offers a fascinating display of local history for adults. However, the young visitors enjoy the children’s activity area. It’s perfect for a rainy day or when you want something calm yet engaging. It’s a great mix of learning and play, and best of all, the general admission and parking is free.  

4. Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park: Rich in history + architecture, this park is beautiful, informative, and fun! The park is located beside Tennessee State Museum and the Farmer’s Market. This is the perfect spot to grab lunch and eat outside while watching the kids play.

5. Wasioto Park – Formerly known as Cumberland Park, Wasioto Park is a favorite outdoor space for families. The park has plenty of green spaces, a playground, trails, climbing walls, and a seasonal splash fountain. You can’t beat the beautiful views of the Nashville riverfront.  Don’t forget to bring swimsuits and towels so the kids can splash around and cool down!

6. Gaylord Opryland: You can’t go wrong staying here any time of year. Your family will love exploring the atriums and gardens with waterfalls, tropical plants, and surprises around every corner. SoundWaves is an indoor/outdoor water park that is a big draw for families year-round. You’ll enjoy the toddler splash zone, lazy river, and kid-friendly slides. If you’re visiting near Christmas, you won’t want to miss all of the holiday lights and Ice which has themed sculptures, hot chocolate and snow tubing.

7. Lane Motor Museum: If your crew can’t get enough of wheels and engines, this is a MUST. A collection of rare cars, microcars, and historic vehicles, the museum is fun for curious kids and adults alike. It’s one of those hidden gems parents and kids love discovering together.

8. Nashville Zoo: Spread over nearly 200 acres, the Nashville zoo offers exciting exhibits, opportunities to learn about wildlife, and plenty of space to run around. There’s a playground and carosel for kids and adults to ride. If you’re visiting in the summer, arrive early to catch animal feedings and beat the afternoon heat.

9. Aquarium Restaurant: You’ll score big point with the family on this dinner spot. It’s located inside of Opry Mills Mall, and the massive aquarium is filled with colorful fish, stingrays, and sharks. Mealtime becomes an underwater adventure that even picky eaters enjoy. It’s perfect for birthdays, celebrations, or a fun meal between activities. The adventure loving kids can even pet the stingrays.

10. Little Art House: If you have artistic little ones, then you’ll want to check out this locally, woman-owned business. Their art studios are perfect for creating, learning, and having fun. They offer single classes, summer camps, and kid birthday parties, too.

11. Breeden’s Orchard: While technically not in Nashville, it’s located 30 minutes away in Mt. Juliet. However, we think it’s worth mentioning. The orchard has a an activity area for $5 per person. There’s a tiny town made just for kids, farm animals, story time, and hands on painting activities. It’s a place to slow down, get outside, and enjoy Tennessee orchard life.
